Weed Guards

Weed is one of the easiest places to locate pike in the summer. But it’s not that easy to fish with just any regular streamer in weed. There are numerous ways to protect your hook from weed. You can even buy weedless hooks on market but I prefer to use my own weed guards. Here are a few simple ways to protect your hook using hard mono.

This one is pretty efficient and easy to tie. Can be tied in single or double fashion.

Bent wire or mono

This style of weed guard is popular with many Florida guides. I would recommend this guard style for still waters with not that much weed on surface.If you expect big fish to strike I advice you to use wire because pike can damage mono easily.

Bent double mono over hook

This is my favorite way to protect the hook, but it’s the hardest one to tie. This will last much longer compared to Double mono loop weed guard. Use lighter to deform the monofilament.

Silicone tube weed guard

This style is seen more often in soft lure spinner fishing but it’s worth trying it in fly fishing as well.
